It made me feel something something human, something related to love. Submerged was cleverly written, but seemed more like it was trying too hard and just didn’t quite get it right.

The descriptions strike a balance between letting you figure out what the creature is while not interfering with the flow of the story. Yes, the story is a bit shrouded in metaphor, but I feel that it is more of a nod to the fact that the story was inspired by the song “I crush everything” by Jonathan Coulton. Personally, I found “Submerged” to be far more interesting than “The Genuine Article”, mostly because “The Genuine Article” felt incomplete and its voice felt flat which lead to me being bored. Compare it to “Nuts and Bolts of the Heart” to see an example of a good voice, but beware, “Nuts and Bolts of the Heart” revels in its delightfully cheesy atmosphere. It has some other problems, but the voice and emotions portrayed are very real. The Genuine Article just seems to be floundering around a point it is trying to make in vain. Maybe it would succeed if it had more room to explore it, but as it stands, my vote goes to “Submerged”.

Her work is subtle, graceful, and intelligent. Her competition needs to be warned of the concept of over-description. I found myself wanting to skim passages, and this is just flash fiction. Also, anthropomorphizing, rarely a good thing done quickly.
