- Working with the CTO to set technology strategy;
- Technology evaluation and direction to the commerce, community, and advertising teams; and
- Technical due diligence for acquisitions.
Director, Advanced Technologies, October 1996 to May 1998.
Reponsibilities included:
- Researching, designing, and prototyping advanced products;
- Providing technical assistance and guidance to all Lycos and third party
engineering groups, including design reviews, some code reviews, and
trouble shooting and solution generation;
- Reviewing technologies and partnerships being presented to us. This
includes technologies for in-house use, licensing, co-branding, and acquisition;
- Keeping abreast of emerging internet standards, technologies, products and
competition; and
- Being a technical spokesperson for engineering while interacting with
other departments within Lycos;
Director, Product Development, July 1995 to October 1996.
Lead numerous development efforts, including the development of the
lycos Centispeed spider, the technical side of the A2Z directory, the
original advertising scheduling, insertion, and tracking system, the
Lycos backlink system, and the customization software for supporting
multiple views of the same on-line service.

Research Programmer, Center for Machine Translation, January 1990 to July 1995.
- The WebAnts project
- Principal investigator on this project, funded by Texas
Instruments, to develop prototype distributed information discovery
and retrieval agents for the World Wide Web.
- The Catalyst Project
- Member of the development team for a large-scale one-to-many
translation system. Developed and maintained most of the text
generation software, as well as tools for corpus analysis and
knowledge base construction. Also, headed up the Spanish generation
team.
- The Dionysis Project
- Member of the development team for this distributed machine
translation system designed around a blackboard model.
Developed the blackboard control architecture and provided integration
support.
