It’s Moving Pictures Monday, and I’ve got a moody little film for you this week. Invention of Love is an animated short from 2010 from Andrey Shushkov at the Saint-Petersburg State University of Culture and Arts in Russia, and it tells a story of love in a world of clockwork and airships. There is no dialog and the characters and their world exist as simply silhouettes and shadows. Despite these seeming limitations, the story is detailed and evocatively told, as we follow a couple from their first meeting until the end of the story (which I will not give away here). Well worth the 10 minutes it takes to watch for the aesthetic of the piece alone.
Please let us know what you think.
