“Weird West” is a corner of the steampunk universe that has gotten some on screen exposure in the past with very mixed results. On the one hand, the tv series “The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr.” was a lot of fun, complete with Bruce Campbell in the title role and Kelly Rutherford as the ridiculously named femme fatale Dixie Cousins. On the other hand, the film version of “Wild Wild West” with Will Smith and Kevin Kline was absolute crap.

Next summer, we’ll have a new attempt at doing this subgenre right and it looks promising. “Cowboys and Aliens” is based on a graphic novel by Scott Mitchell Rosenberg and gives us an alien invasion in the old west. Jon Favreau (“Iron Man”) is directing and Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, and Olivia Wilde are starring. Throw in Damon Lindelof as co-writer, and Ron Howard and Stephen Spielberg as producers and you can see what the buzz is about.

There is plenty of other information at the official site, but you can watch the first trailer right here:
