Cast the Boneshaker Movie

Boneshaker by Cherie Priest

If you haven’t heard yet, Cherie Priest’s novel Boneshaker is headed for the big screen thanks to Hammer Films. This is great news, as the book is wonderful (and was picked as our 2010 Book of the Year).

So, let’s have some fun. Who would you cast in the different roles?

Here are a dozen main(ish) characters to get you started, but feel free to suggest choices for minor characters.

  • Leviticus Blue
  • Briar Wilkes
  • Zeke Wilkes
  • Maynard Wilkes
  • Alaister Mayhem Osterude (Rudy)
  • Princess Angeline
  • Jeremiah Swakhammer
  • Lucy O’Gunning
  • Yaozu
  • Minnericht
  • Andan Cly
  • Croggon Beauregard Hainey

I’ll kick things off with a few suggestions:

  • Briar: Vera Farmiga (although there is some other actress I’d prefer whose name I cannot remember, but who looks like Holly Hunter, but with darker hair).
  • Maynard: Sam Elliot
  • Minnericht: Hugo Weaving or Titus Welliver

I think Angeline will be particularly hard to cast; they need a native American actress in her 60s or so who is believable is such a physical role. Angeline is a very special sort of bad-ass and I hope they find someone who can do the part justice.

So, what’s your dream cast?

  1. Jack Horner says:

    Jeremiah Swakhammer – Brendan Gleeson

  2. Patrick Doris says:

For Princess Angeline Elaine Mills who was Marylin on Northern Exposure
    For Briar Jodie Foster
    For Adan Clay Laurence Fishbrune
Lucy/ Rose McGowan ( she has experience playing a cyborg)

  3. Lisa says:

    Minnericht – Wil Wheaton

  4. Witten Henderson says:

    Leviticus Blue – Mark Strong
    Briar Wilkes – Charlise Theron
    Zeke Wilkes – Ben Barnes
    Maynard Wilkes – Sam Eliot…definitely
    Swakhammer – Hugh Jackman

  5. Witten Henderson says:

Andan Cly – Michael Clarke Duncan

  6. Langley West says:

I’m not sure who his character would be, but I think Ron Pearlman needs to be in there somewhere.

  7. Jay says:

I’d have Jaime Murray as Briar. Logan Lehman for Zeke. Ron Pearlman for Swakhammer. And Julie Walters for Lucy.

  8. missoularedhead says:

Yaozu…the host of Iron Chef America. There’s something vaguely sinister about that guy.

  9. Alex J. Kane says:

I’d say Kodi Smit-McPhee as Zeke, and either Olivia Wilde or Samantha Morton as Briar. Mark Strong as Leviticus Blue, as suggested above, is also a great choice.

  10. Mareth says:

    Minnericht- Hugho Weaving
    Swakhammer- Hugh jackman
    Zeke- Shia la Bouf
    Briar- vera farmiga

  11. Briar Wilkes – Clea DuVall
    Zeke – Tanner Richie

    and I absolutely agree on:
    Wil Wheaton as Minnericht
    Sam Elliot as Maynard
    Hugh Jackman as Swakhammer
    Rose McGowan as Lucy

  12. Briar Wilkes – Michelle Monaghan
    Zeke Wilkes – Logan Lerman
    Princess Angeline – Tantoo Cardinal
    Jeremiah Swakhammer – Adam Baldwin
    Yaozu – Collin Chou
Croggon Beauregard Hainey – MC Duncan

  13. Murphy D. says:

I totally agree, Mark Strong should play Leviticus Blue, and Wil Wheaton would be a solid Minnericht.
I think that Robert Maillet (Dredger from Sherlock Holmes) would make an excellent Captain Cly– dude’s seven feet tall!

  14. Misa says:

I’m going to toss in Cliff Simon as Swakhammer, just to be predictable ;D

  15. Jeff says:

    Kate Beckinsale as Briar
Freddie Highmore or Charlie Rowe as Zeke
    Charles Dance as Minnericht
    Sam Elliot as Maynard
    Allison Scagliotti as Lucy O’Gunning

  16. Douglas says:

I wouldn’t mind taking a crack at one of the main characters. Or even a side part if so needed.

  17. Eric says:

I agree with Lonnie about having Tantoo Cardinal for Angeline. She’s in her 60s and looks to be in great shape for the role and has done “matriarchal” roles before. Patrick is way off on his suggestion, while Elaine Miles is a great actor, I can’t see her in the part at all. Ron Perleman as Swakhammer is great. He is indy enough to make it cultish without the Hugh Jackman mass produced feel. I like Hugh Jackman, but come on folks, this is steampunk not Marvel. I would further suggest that no name or low name actors for the rest. I hope whoever is the casting director takes a look at these fanpages. Respect to all

  18. Nate says:

I like the idea of Vera Farmiga as Briar… she’s always been open to new kinds of movies and Boneshaker would definitely qualify. She could pull it off. Also Jodie Foster is a wonderful idea. They could both pull off Briar’s personality very well. One more alternative though: Noomi Rapace could be interesting.
Also Brendan Gleeson or Ron Perlman as Swakhammer needs to happen. I don’t think there could be better ones.
Hugo Weaving as a villain will never cease to be awesome and its no different in this case.
Logan Lerman as Zeke, too, is a good idea, especially after seeing him in 3:10 to Yuma.
I’m going to put Idris Elba in for Andan Cly as well.

  19. Andy Corbie says:

    Briar – Famke Janssen
    Andun Cly – Ron Perlman
    Swakhammer – Clancy Brown
    Croggan Hainey – Don Cheadle
    Minnericht – Jason Isaacs
    Zeke – Asa Butterfield

  20. Daniel says:

I absolutely agree with Vera Farminga as Briar. Titus Welliver would be a good Minnericht, Logan Lerman as Zeke, Tantoo Cardinal as Angeline, and Cliff Simon is sort of who I pictured as Leviticus Blue.

No way will Hugh Jackman, Shia lebouf, or Jodie foster be on my list.

  21. kazuma drewsin says:

    john malkovich – Leviticus Blue
    Rodrigo Santoro – Yaozu
    Kristen Steward – briar
Stacey Dash(i know what your going to say but image her 30 years older) – Princess Angeline
    rosie o’donnell – lucy o’gunning
    Daniel Day-Lewis – Minnerricht
    Bruce Willis – Swakhammer

  22. luxusis says:

    I`ve got something a bit different…

    Lucy o’gunning – Ewa Kasprzyk

    Leviticus Blue – Krzysztof Wakuliński
    Minnerricht – Maciej Kozłowski
