Amazing Steampunk Style Watches from Kudoke

Steampunk style comes at many price points, from decorated Nerf pistols and goggles made from scraps to hand-tailored costumes and custom-built computers. Very close to the top of that price list is things like the Skeleton watches from Kudoke, a high end watchmaker from Germany.

Skeleton watches are not new, and we’ll be featuring some more in the future, but some watchmakers go the extra step to make the clockworks themselves decorative. The clearest case of this from Kudoke is the Kudoktopus, in which a jeweled cephalopod seems to have entangled itself in the gears. Quite a lovely timepiece. Twitter followers of Lady Gaga were treated this weekend to some pictures that suggest the pop star may be considering a Steampunk turn. The two pictures posted via Instagram show Ms. Gaga wearing a hat and ensemble from Worth Couture Paris (although she was in Denmark, she pointed out). The feathers, veil, and detailing do have a period feel to them, although looking at anything else from Worth Couture upcoming collections, it is hard to see a clear 19th century influence.

Still, it is fun to speculate, given some of Lady Gaga’s earlier wardrobe, um, choices.

A bit of 19th century elegance is coming to a mall chain near you this fall. Banana Republic, in partnership with Focus Features, is creating a collection of clothes inspired by the forthcoming production of Anna Karenina, starring Keira Knightly, Jude Law, and Aaron Johnson. (Alas, not Android Karenina.) The collection, which they describe as “a special holiday capsule” is being “styled and curated by twice-Academy Award-nominated Anna Karenina costume designer Jacqueline Durran.”

We haven’t seen any part of the line itself yet, but I can show you some of the lavish costumes Durran designed for the film. They are impressive.
