Call for Submissions: Dark Beauty Magazine 3rd Steampunk Issue
Dark Beauty Magazine is looking for content for their third annual Steampunk issue, as announced on Facebook:
The Airships are rising and we are gathering our forces for this our 3rd Annual Dark Beauty Magazine Steampunk issue out in April 2013. If you are interested in featuring your fashion, weapons, gadgets, jewelry and other amazing air quality steampunk goodies we are more than excited to share it with our readership this April. Content is due March 15th, send to us at http://bit.ly/DBM_Submit.
I know there are a lot of Steampunk designers and artists out there. Show them your stuff. Submissions for print have to be previously unpublished, but the same restriction does not apply for submissions for their online photo stream.
And, regardless of whether you are in a position to submit, remember to look for the issue in April.
Happy Hanukkah, Steampunk Style
Hanukkah starts tonight this year and what better way to mark the occasion than to take a look at some iconic elements of the celebration of light all done up Steampunk style.
Dreidel
Flickr user gozdom (no real name given) created a beautiful Steampunk dreidel and was kind enough to share several shots of it on Flickr. If you haven’t come across a dreidel before, it is a top used in traditional Hanukkah game.

Menorah
The menorah is perhaps the most recognized symbol of Hanukkah and is used to mark off the nights throughout this holiday.

Steampunk Lighting at Restoration Hardware
Steampunk continues to make inroads on mainstream style. Restoration Hardware has always showcased distinctive styles and their current lighting offerings include a number of options that have a Steampunk feel to them. Of course, the prices aren’t exactly budget friendly, but if you are creating a Steampunk look for a room, the investment might be well worth it. And if you can’t go fully monty, you can still dress up a less expensive lamp with their vintage-look Edison-style light bulbs.
The Amazingly Steampunk Spider-Men
Denis Medri’s illustration of a Steampunk Spider-Man has been making the rounds on the Internet lately and it is undoubtedly a cool take on the webslinger. And it got me thinking about how other people might see Spidey in a Steampunk world. Well, it turns out there are plenty of different attempts at this and I’ve collected a bunch of them for your viewing enjoyment.
(For people wanting to see more work by these artists, look for them on DeviantArt (except Jin Saotome who was on Toy Ark). I’m working on making the images link directly to the artist’s pages, but the plugin is fighting me, alas.)
I’ll have to see what other Steampunk superhero and villain remakes I can find. Any requests?
Aether Cola, the First Steampunk Soda
Steampunk continues to infiltrate new territory, this time the soft drink world, with Aether Cola, which seems to be the first Steampunk cola. This is a welcome addition to the potable choices available to a Steampunk enthusiast, as most of the exist options have been of the alcoholic persuasion (e.g. Hendrick’s Gin, Kraken Rum, and many varieties of absinthe).
Unlike other colas, Aether Cola is clear, and, in proper 19th century fashion, Aether Cola even has some patent medicine claims in their marketing. Unfortunately, I have yet to secure some of this potentially tasty beverage for myself; CyberCandy will ship to the Americas, but their site would not let me add it to my cart. For the moment at least, I’ll have to ask my readers who have to share their experiences with us.
