A Steampunk Tarot
Etsy artist Charissa Drengsen is producing some striking steampunk tarot cards.
Now, some are more steampunk than others. Death is simply beautiful, from the traditional skeleton to the mounted scarabs down the side. Harry Houdini as the Magician seems spot on. On the other hand, Albert Einstein as the Hierophant feels out of place to me, as most of his work was done outside of the conventional steampunk time period. Most of the cards have a rich collage feeling, although a few, such as the ace of cups, look more like stills from one of Terry Gilliam’s Monty Python animations. Whether any of these quibbles detract from your enjoyment or appreciation of the deck is, of course, a matter of individual taste.

Steampunk Comes to Bergdorf’s Windows
Every year, the unveiling of the holiday windows at Bergdorf Goodman in New York City is a big deal. In fact, this year they released a very limited edition (550 copies) book about their windows (over $800 on Amazon!).
Their windows are always a visual treat, but their year we have some definite steampunk (or at least 19th century mixed with fantasy) elements and tone to some of them. With gears, homemade-looking cars, armillary spheres, and even a moon-bound sparkling octopus, the windows are right at the “intersection of technology and romance,” Jake von Slatt’s definition of steampunk.

Steampunk Makeover for Batman
The folks over at Whitechapel are having a bit of fun with the Dark Knight, giving him a steampunk-style makeover. More specifically, people were asked to create a poster for a steampunk era Batman movie. Some might quibble about whether the invention of movies is outside the traditional steampunk time period, but it’s all good as far as I’m concerned. Call is Dieselpunk if you prefer (and a lot of the posters are very Art Deco, so that seems appropriate) or just allow the invention of moving pictures to have come sooner in a steampunk world. In any case, I’ve collected a few of my favorites so far, but there are many more over at the contest page (and several days left to go for more entries). Love them or hate them, there are some interesting reimaginings here. Enjoy.
