2012 Hugo Award Nominees Announced: A Hugo for Hugo?

Hugo Award

The Hugo Nominees have been announced for 2012 and again some Steampunk has made the cut, albeit not in any of the big fiction categories.

In the dramatic presentation, long form, category, the wonderful film Hugo is nominated, giving some representation to Steampunk. Now, some argue that it is not really Steampunk and I see their points, although the automaton pretty clearly fits the aesthetic if not the time period. Steampunk or not, Hugo faces stiff competition from both Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 and season one of HBO and George R R Martin’s epic Game of Thrones. Also nominated in the category are Captain America and Source Code, although I suspect they are dark horses in this race.

The Steampunk Bible has been nominated for Best Related Work, a category that is showing itself to be quite the catchall. Other nominees are the monumental The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction, Third Edition, Seanan McGuire’s newest filk cd Wicked Girls, the sixth season of the podcast series Writing Excuses, and Daniel M. Kimmel’s rumination on science fiction films agreeable titled Jar Jar Binks Must Die… and other Observations about Science Fiction Movies. An interesting mix of media to be sure, but we’re hoping The Steampunk Bible comes out on top.

I would also be remiss if I did not mention Liz Gorinsky, nominated for Best Editor, Long Form. In her career at Tor, she has been a great friend to Steampunk, editing works by Cherie Priest, George Mann, and Lev Rosen. A sincerely thanks and our whole-hearted support go to Ms. Gorinsky.
